The Big Picture – 8.3.2010

Dear Friends of Mobile Monday Berlin,

To start off a busy Berlin MoMo year, the first event of 2010 on March 8th will take a look at global trends and the new ecosystem in the mobile industry from a bird’s eye perspective in order to get a grasp of “The Big Picture”. While it’s natural that most mobile companies are focused on their specific solution, technology or business development, it’s important not to lose track of changes in consumer behavior or the underlying value chain.

That’s why Berlin MoMo will be inviting experienced analysts to hold short but in-depth keynotes about what has changed in larger trends and where the market stands both from a consumer and an industry perspective. To follow up, we’ll have a panel discussion with a group of high-profile experts to put the analysts’ findings into perspective.

Our Speakers:
Ajit Jaokar (futuretext), Matthäus Krzykowski (Venture Beat), Martin Menzel (maniac lizard)

Our Panel Participants:
Ajit Jaokar (futuretext), Matthäus Krzykowski (Venture Beat), Martin Menzel (maniac lizard), Scott Lyons (Motorola), Philippe Souidi (23ideas), Markus Berger-de León (Abacho)

As always, after presentations there will be plenty of time for in-depth conversation and networking by the bar.

Ensure your seat by logging in (or register) and clicking WILL ATTEND at http://www.mobile-monday.de/events/big-picture.

Please get your mobile or pdf ticket by clicking on the barcode icon next to the event details.

(In case of any registration problems, we will handle them at the venue entrance on the very evening.)

Definitely an event not to be missed!

Mobile Monday “Agency Day” – 23.11.2009

The Mobile Monday Chapter Berlin Invites You to the

Mobile Monday – Topic: “Agency Day”

23rd of November 2009, at HomeBase Lounge, Berlin

Dear MoMo Berlin Friends,

The mobile world and traditional online and brand communication seems sometimes to stand apart like different worlds. E.g. the mobile scene meets annually at the World Congress in Barcelona, while protagonists of online and above the line advertising gather in Cannes.
Against this backdrop it happens frequently that, when asked by agency clients about possible mobile components of a marketing campaign, agencies lack connections to what’s going on in that area of the digital industry. Vice versa, application developers, mobile marketing agencies and startups often find it hard to get in contact with “established” advertising firms.
It’s the goal of the next Berlin Mobile Monday to change this status quo under the title of “Agency Day”. The event will be introduced by a keynote from veteran TV commercial producer and ADC member Hans-Joachim “Bulle” Berndt and a panel of experienced and entertaining representatives of both industries.
Subsequently we start with the networking part of the evening. To create maximum visibility for the attending companies, everyone is asked to send in a “one-slide” power point document of their business or company – e.g. on what you are providing and what you are searching for.
These slides will run in a loop on a screen at the event location to inform everybody about other guests and inspire networking. Please send your one-page business development pitch to berlin@mobile-monday.de.
Besides please register via Mobile Monday.

Location Based Services – 7.9.2009

Mobile Monday

For many years, Location Based Services (LBS) have been the most disappointing “Killer Application” of the Mobile Internet. Technically, it was possible to locate a mobile phone user based on his proximity to mobile network cells and offer him bespoke services as early as 2001. But the well-known hindrances of the German mobile business – namely handset fragmentation and suffocating operator policies – prevented LBS to ever take off.

As in many other applications of the Mobile Internet, it took outside players to change the game. GPS-based location finding is not only more convenient than cell bearing but emancipates LBS from operator pre-product pricing, thus making a whole new array of services feasible and affordable to both businesses and consumers. However, as in all industries, the fact that a product and service is technically feasible and financially affordable does not mean that consumers will actually want it. Mobile TV is one recent example of a product that, despite much effort in creation, ultimately nobody wanted. Mobile payment is another one.

So how can LBS avoid the same fate? Quite obviously, for LBS there are some fundamental advantages already. Nokia, Apple and most other manufacturers of multimedia handsets have integrated mapping functionalities into the very default setup of their products. No-one in the market doubts that “location” is a highly attractive, even indispensable driver of services and advertising – in fact, through affordable car navigation systems it has already become a consumer standard.

However, all market players realize that the mere existence of maps and location-finding alone won’t bring in the money. They are not ends, but means – enablers for business-driven ideas and services. And these ideas and services, as on the internet, won’t come down from big corporations. They are being developed at street level – by startups, agencies or small internet companies. Who in turn often lack reach and stamina to establish themselves on the bigger scale needed to create sustainable business. So ultimately, the challenge is in bringing the players together in a sensible and profitable way – which is not easy given the fact that in Mobile, there is no unifying platform like Microsoft’s was for computing and the internet. This, however, is where grassroots industry organisations like Mobile Monday can play a significant role. And so it will – come and participate on September 7!

Mobile Monday – 8.6.2009

Mobile Monday

Ringtones, Wallpapers, Java Games: that’s how entertainment media on mobile started out about 8 years ago. However, the expected craze for entertainment on mobile never materialized. Accordingly, some market players have disappeared, yet others have been scaling down or rewriting their business plans.

Operators and handset manufacturers are rethinking their role, while previously uninvolved parties like Apple and Google strive to reinvent the market.
That’s the background against which many companies from the mobile data industry are looking to define their future. Some of them have been in the market from the beginning, others – like social communities or LBS providers – are only now entering it. All in all, it looks like a fresh start!

This installment of Mobile Monday Berlin will take a broad look at where mobile entertainment is heading and what’s in store for the next 12 months. The speaker lineup reflects this broad approach:

  • T-Mobile
  • StudiVZ
  • Dolby Digital
  • Jupidi
  • Fastfood Challenge
  • Exozet
  • Cartagena Capital
  • Kimiasol
  • ZED

As always, after short presentations there will be plenty of time for in-depth conversation and networking by the bar.

Ensure your seat by logging in (or register) and clicking WILL ATTEND at http://www.mobile-monday.de/events/mobile-entertainment-mobile . Please get your mobile or pdf ticket by clicking on the barcode icon next to the event details.
